We are all familiar with Coca-Cola (or simply Coke, if you prefer) as a drink but do you know it can be used in cooking too? Coca Cola chicken is a classic Chinese recipe where Coca Cola is used as the base of the simmering sauce, which not only tenderises but also cameralises the chicken wings. The result is delicious, finger-licking good chicken wings (at least I tend to use chicken wings instead of the whole chicken) with a sweet & sticky glaze. This is a super easy recipe with only a few ingredients and steps. I first saw this recipe prepared during a TV show, I think it was MasterChef Australia or something similar, and I fell in love with it. Sneaking in coke into home cooking somehow feels less guilty than drinking it!
INGREDIENTS 8 mid joint chicken wings 1 tablespoon light soy sauce 1-2 tablespoon dark soy sauce 1 tablespoon sesame oil 1 tablespoon cooking oil 200 ml. regular Coca-Cola 200 ml. water
3 garlic cloves peeled and bruised
Marinade the chicken wings in light soy sauce, dark soy sauce and sesame oil for 15 minutes. Heat oil in wok or saucepan and brown chicken on both sides. Add Coca-Cola, water, garlic and leftover marinade sauce. Simmer for 15-20 minutes until the sauce is reduced to a thick & sticky syrup, turning once halfway. Serve Coca Cola chicken warm.
